Press Release: Libertarian Party of Georgia Condemns Federal Immigration Enforcement Practices, Reaffirms Commitment to Individual Rights and Due Process

Atlanta, GA – The Libertarian Party of Georgia condemned the immigration enforcement policies of the Trump administration, warning that the continued expansion of federal enforcement power, particularly through Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), poses a serious threat to individual liberty, constitutional governance, and the rule of law.

The Libertarian Party of Georgia platform is explicit: government force must be strictly limited to the protection of individual rights to life, liberty, and property. Laws should apply only to violations involving force or fraud, and government must never be permitted to violate the rights it claims to protect. When federal agencies operate beyond these limits, they undermine public trust and erode constitutional protections for everyone.

Recent fatalities illustrate the dangers of a militarized enforcement regime that lacks transparency and meaningful accountability. This Saturday ICE agents fatally shot 37-year-old Alex Jeffrey Pretti—a U.S. citizen and Minneapolis VA nurse—during a DHS operation in south Minneapolis. This incident, along with the death of Renee Good on January 7, has sparked protests and national debate about federal enforcement practices.

Regardless of immigration status, individuals within U.S. jurisdiction retain their fundamental rights, including due process and equal protection under the law. No agency may lawfully exercise lethal force without strict constitutional restraint.

The Libertarian Party of Georgia strongly rejects claims by Trump administration officials that ICE officers possess “absolute immunity” for their enforcement actions. Our platform opposes special legal privileges for government officials, including qualified immunity, prosecutorial overcharging, no-knock warrants, and civil asset forfeiture. A legal system that shields state actors from accountability is incompatible with equal justice and invites abuse.

The Party also opposes the deployment of the National Guard or other militarized forces for domestic enforcement purposes beyond those narrowly authorized by the U.S. and Georgia Constitutions. Normalizing emergency powers and military-style tactics in civilian life threatens civil liberties and constitutional balance.

The Libertarian Party of Georgia remains committed to a society in which individual rights are upheld without exception and no government agency operates above the law.
