Once again the CDC and NIH and other agencies of government are warning that we’re all gonna die. Three years ago avian flu was going to kill us. This year it’s supposed to be swine flu. What will it be next year, the SpongeBob flu?
We are Libertarians and we are suspicious of our government’s pronouncements. As the administration maneuvers to cram socialized medicine down our throat it needs a boogieman. As the CDC and every other government agency positions itself for budget increases they also need straw men. And Libertarians ain’t buying it.
There is a cliché about the medicine being worse than the disease. For Libertarians, socialized health care is far, far worse than any boogieman disease being floated by alphabet-soup bureaucrats who think they are smarter than the sum total of all the choices made by free individuals.
I’ll make a deal with the administration. If indeed there is some significant outbreak of Swine Flu between now and April, 2010, I swear I never will write another word about government health care. But the deal is off unless all the bureaucrats responsible for these alarms promise that they will commit ceremonial hari kari if the swine flu outbreak does not materialize by then. Oh, okay, I’ll settle for them publicly acknowledging that they were wrong and resigning from their jobs.
Any takers?
