LPGa 2008 Convention A Big Success

The Libertarian Party of Georgia annual Convention was Saturday, March 1st. The Convention nominated candidates for the US Senate and the PSC, elected new Executive Committee Representatives, and a new treasurer and chairman. As usual, it was a ton of fun, highlighted by an energetic but strange debate between two candidates for the Libertarian Party nomination for President, Daniel Imperato and Wayne Allyn Root. The Convention made one change to bylaws and several platform changes, although many of those were correcting typos and grammatical errors.

The convention nominated Allen Buckley as the Libertarian candidate for the US Senate. This is Buckley’s third run for office, and his second try for Senate.

The Libertarian candidates for Public Service Commission are John Monds of Cairo in District 1, and Brandon Givens from Gainesville in the 4th. Both these positions are voted on state-wide, but the candidates must live in the designated district.

With three candidates for state-wide office in November, the Libertarian Party will continue our ballot access status and reach our highest vote totals yet.

The Convention also named some new Party officers and District Representatives to the Executive Committee.

Daniel Adams of Madison is the new Chairman of the Libertarian Party of Georgia, elected to a two-year term. And Aaron Gilmer of Marietta is the new Treasurer. Jack Aiken and Doyle Jones remain as Vice-Chairman and Secretary for another year.

Our four At-Large Representatives to the ExComm are David Shock, Christine Austin, Amanda Blackburn, and Kevin Cherry.

The District Representatives live in the area corresponding to the five Public Service Commission districts. The 2008 – 2009 rep in District 1 is John Monds. David Corr, Jason McCart, and Bill Raser serve in the 2nd District. Representing District 3 are Jay Whitney, Chris Barber, Chad Colopy, and Daniel Bryant. The new 4th District Rep to the state Executive Committee is Brandon Lee. And District 5 is represented by Ziad Minkara, Matt Godown, Mike Wilson, and James Bell.

In addition to taking care of the Party business, the delegates heard several presentations by noted Libertarians. Libertarian National Committee Chairman Bill Redpath spoke at the post-Convention banquet, and seemed to enjoy the lively Q&A session that followed. Former Congressman Bob Barr spoke about privacy at lunch. And during pauses in the business sessions, we also heard from Jacob Hornberger of the Future of Freedom Foundation, and Jared Thomas of the Georgia chapter of Americans For Prosperity.

The Libertarian Party of Georgia thanks everyone who helped and attended the Convention. Consider coming next year, for a day of intellectual stimulation with like-minded people. It makes for a tremendous experience.
