Tim Nelson, Region 1 Representative on the Executive Committee of the Libertarian Party of Georgia, spoke before last night’s Lee County Commission meeting, requesting consideration of a local referendum for Lee County voters to consider allowing sales of alcohol for off-premise consumption. This follows the state Party’s victory encouraging the General Assembly to pass SB 10, which was signed by the Governor in May.
Local activists and Party leaders are working on this issue across the state, with many being the first to bring up the issue with their local and county governments, as is the case with Mr. Nelson’s comments to the Lee County Commission.
“I would’ve like to have seen a vote tonight because it’s not that big of an issue. All they have to do is say they’re going to take a vote and let the citizens choose. I’m not asking for approval. I just want the see the citizens vote,” said Nelson. “You elect officials to make decisions but when you’re given the opportunity to vote on something that’s such a grassroots and important issue to certain people and certain groups it’s best to get the entire community to vote and that the biggest thing I’m asking for.”
