On Wednesday, Libertarian candidate for Georgia Governor, John Monds, spoke with students and faculty at Georgia Highlands College, speaking on the importance of our nation’s founding documents, like the Declaration of Independence and the U.S. Constitution. He also discussed how the ideals of 2010 America are very different from those in 1776 or 1787 America.
From the Rome News Tribune:
American government has become too big, too involved, and has too much control over its citizens’ lives and their decisions, according to John Monds, Libertarian candidate for Georgia governor.
[…]“If you hold government to its role, it wouldn’t be this big,” said Monds while stretching his arms in opposite directions.
“It’d be this big,” he continued, holding his hands only inches apart.
The Cairo native said Libertarians believe each person should be responsible for themselves and their family, and the government should not be providing things an individual should be providing for himself.
“People will work out their own problems if given the chance,” said Monds. “You can’t have a free country without a free people.”
He described his and the other two major political parties as parents, saying the Democrats are the overly caring, overly nurturing parents that never give their child a chance to grow up and stand on its on feet. The Republicans, he explained, are the overly stern parents, who set impossible rules and then punish their child when it fails to follow the rules.
Libertarians on the other hand, are the parents who send their 18-year-old child out into the world and wish them luck, he said. Their child becomes responsible for himself and no one else until he chooses to.
Monds said Libertarians, because of their small-government preference, are often dismissed as the politicians that want people on drugs. The truth is, he said, Libertarians only think people should have the right to do to their bodies what they want. They’d rather people eat healthy and take care of themselves, but it’s their right not to, he said.
“It’s about your body. It’s about your right to control your decisions and not have the government decide for you,” Monds said.
