Kira Willis Announces Bid for State School Superintendent

Kira Willis today announces her entrance into the race for State School Superintendent and is seeking the nomination of the Libertarian Party. Willis, a veteran teacher from Roswell, Georgia, runs on the ABCs of education: Accountability, Budget, and Community.

“Accountability is not only for teachers but also for students, parents, educational systems and politicians,” said Willis. She believes that what was once a partnership between the school and home has become a disenfranchised blame game. She says “As State School Superintendent, I want to help mend the bridge between the school and the home.”

Budget cuts are at the forefront of schools today. Willis promotes effective spending within schools and school districts and opposes frivolous spending for committees and jobs where there is no student contact. “We must take our educational system in Georgia seriously. It is time to ensure that the educational budget is used to effectively teach students on all levels. I will eliminate positions that have little or no student contact.”

Willis promotes community via genuine local control of education. “We need to give the schools back to their communities! What is best for students in Atlanta may not be best for students in Rome or Valdosta.” According to Willis, stripping control of education from the local communities and giving it to the State and Federal government was a disservice to the students and to the school community. By reinstituting genuine local control of education decisions, Willis believes that students will achieve higher levels of learning.
