Gwinnett County Georgia Trashes Free Market

Belief in free enterprise and non-intervention by government in a free market are cornerstones of the Libertarian Party and the libertarian movement. The recent move by Gwinnett County to restrict and control trash collection undermines this concept.

The Libertarian Party believes citizens should have the right to choose in this matter, and private companies should be able to provide goods and services without government interference.

Daniel Adams, chairman of the Libertarian Party of Georgia, said free market competition is the best way to provide better quality services at lower prices.

“We believe the role of government is limited to projects and services that can not be provided by private enterprise,” Adams said. “We oppose government policies that restrict choice and threaten to put business owners out of business. As a matter of fact, what the Gwinnett County government has done is just flat out un-American!”

The Libertarian Party of Georgia platform addresses this issue;

“Because each person has the right to offer goods and services to others on the free market, and because government interference can only harm such free activity, we oppose all intervention by government into the area of economics. The only proper role of the State of Georgia and her political subdivisions in the economic realm is to protect property rights, adjudicate disputes, and provide a legal framework in which voluntary trade is protected.

Furthermore;

We advocate the termination of government-created monopolies and franchise privileges such as park management, garbage collection, fire protection, electricity, natural gas, cable television, telephone, or water supplies.”

The Libertarian Party is still the “Party of Principle.”
